Trauma and the Body: Emily Francis and Dawson Church in Conversation
Sunday Aug 29, 2021
Sunday Aug 29, 2021
Host Dr. Dawson Church and his guest Emily Francis talk about healing ourselves especially where trauma is involved.
The mind has an ability to check out in many situations when someone experiences trauma. Some refer to it as shock. For example: after an accident, more times than not the person will be hazy about the experience and cannot properly recall the entire set of events. We basically separate ourselves from any impact that may be occurring to the body itself. That is a gift of the mind that helps us to survive. The body, however, does not have that same luxury. The body cannot leave itself. The body takes the pain and absorbs the trauma. The way that our bodies store those particular memories is different from the way that our minds may remember it. When we learn how to dialogue with our body directly in order to recall the memories as they actually occurred and without the narrative of the mind, we can help our body release the stored pain and trauma that may have eluded us in our attempts to heal to this point. On the flip side, an important piece of the work offered Emily’s book and work, is to use the same dialoguing skills with the body to access the happy and joyful memories that the soft tissues store in order to produce more of the same. Following this guidance, we can create within ourselves a place of overall connectedness and personal empowerment. This can result in an increase in overall health, vitality, and wellness that can drastically improve our quality of life.
Guest Bio: Emily A. Francis is a speaker, author, and wellness expert who has studied many types of healing including Craniosacral Therapy, Reiki and neuromuscular massage therapy. Emily is the creator of the Muscle Emotion Chart and the host of the radio show All About Healing on Healthy Life Radio. Recovery From Addiction: Adriana Popescu and Dawson Church in Conversation
Sunday Jul 25, 2021
Sunday Jul 25, 2021
Dr. Adriana Popescu is a licensed clinical psychologist and empowerment coach with over 25 years of experience in the mental health field. She is a certified hypnotherapist and finds that EFT and other Energy Psychology methods provide incredibly powerful tools to identify and eliminate the deep-rooted causes of suffering and distress. She specializes in treating addiction, co-occurring disorders, and trauma, and has directed a number of treatment programs in the San Francisco Bay Area. She is currently the Clinical Director at Avery Lane, an innovative treatment program for women with co-occurring trauma, addiction and mental health disorders. She loves to empower people to overcome their perceived limitations, release their self-judgments, and discover the brilliance within.
She and Dawson are friends, and here they reflect on:
How Addiction is a social disease, triggered by loneliness.
Why conventional treatment is substance abuse focused, the usual approach is to treat trauma later.
Why most conventional treatments use the 12-step model with drug and alcohol counselors rather than Energy Psychology.
From the ACEs study we know that when people go through traumatic events produces lasting impact on brain and body.
Addiction clients are so used to growing up with trauma that meditation feels foreign, weird, they’re not used to relaxation.
Early on tapping, helps them get back in their body, brings cortisol and adrenaline down.
Starting with 10 minute guided meditation; brains can change and regenerate.
What creates sustained recovery is to let go of old persona and claim your light self.

Dilip Jeste, MD, is a neuropsychiatrist who has spent more than 20 years studying aspects of wisdom and healthy aging. He is a professor of psychiatry and neurosciences and the director of the Center for Healthy Aging at the University of California San Diego, and a past president of the American Psychiatric Association. In it he describes evidence-based findings on the definition, measurement, and neurobiology of wisdom as well as its relationship with aging, and interventions to promote wisdom.
He and Dawson have a warm and engaging conversation about:
* How the brains of wiser older people show positive neuroplasticity
* Direct ways of stimulating positive neuroplasticity, like transcranial magnetic stimulation to DPFC ten minutes for 10 days, 5 days week
* Mindfulness can increase volume of gray matter, with matter integrity, in the brain
* Are there people too damaged to heal?
* Serenity prayer. Some things we can’t change, and everyone dies. Focus on what you actually can.
